Japan International Research Center for Agricultural Sciences (JIRCAS) is conducting an international collaboration research "Blast Research Network for Stable Rice Production" in tropical areas in Asia since 2006, in temperate areas and West Africa in collaboration with International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice), respectively, and in East Africa with Nagoya University since 2011. Thus, the international collaboration study is conducting all over the world except for North and South America by using common materials and methods.
Several achievements, such as finding of blast disease in Africa, diversity of blast races, genetic variation of resistance in rice germplasm, and co-differentiation between blast races and rice varieties will be presented in comparing with the results of Asia. And then, I would like to discuss about the remained research subjects and the ways for development of durable protection system for blast disease in Africa.
