Nyando District in Kenya experiences one of the most severe soil erosion in Western Kenya. Empirical studies have shown that physical factors contribute to gulley erosion in the District particularly in Lower Nyakach area. The physical factors include geology, topography, soil and climatic conditions. However, the contribution of culture and other human activities to land degradation has been found to be also important. Rapid increase in population contributes to land use change and if the change is not accompanied by sustainable agricultural practices, it may lead to deterioration of land resources. In this paper I show that underlying factors such as poverty and population increase can explain for changes in land use in the area. This paper presents the results of population change analysis in Nyando between 1969 and 2009. In addition, socio-economic profile of Nyando District and the neighboring Kericho District is compared.
