Rainfed rice is still considered a major production system in Southeast Asia and therefore since it relies heavily on rainfall for water supply, production is unstable and abiotic stresses including water shortage aggravated by climate change pose high risk. The IRRI-Japan collaborative research project, funded by the Japan Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), is developing a web-based decision support system through the application of seasonal weather prediction which could help local rice producers in their production-related decisions including varietal selection, timing of sowing/transplanting, and fertilizer management options for optimal yield under rainfed conditions. In this seminar, its research progress will be presented with a demonstration of the web-system. It hopes to facilitate discussion on the research direction of climate change adaptation in rainfed rice areas in Southeast Asia.
