Aerobic culture is one of the promising water-saving techniques in direct-seeded rice cultivation. Under a temperate climate, several reports documented rice yield greater than 9 t ha-1 in aerobic culture, with the highest yield (11.4 t ha-1) recorded in central Japan. However, yield remains less than 8 t ha-1 in the tropics. In this seminar, I would like to review the rice physiological response to aerobic soils and discuss about suitable genotypes and crop management options for more resource-use efficient and productive aerobic rice culture.
