Bangladesh is an agrarian country; agriculture contributes about 20% of the gross domestic product. Rice is the main crop and the staple food for the 156 million people of the country. To feed the ever-increasing population of the country, rice production is to be increase. Although rice is grown throughout the year, the yield is low. Drought, salinity, flood, low soil fertility and extreme temperature are the major abiotic factors that affect rice production in Bangladesh. On the other hand, due to climate change the rice farming facing new challenges such as uncertainty of rains and temperature fluctuations. In these circumstances, policy should be taken to increase rice production in a sustainable manner for food security of the highly populated country. In this seminar I will highlight the current situation of rice production and will discuss about some strategies to overcome some of the problems.
