Dr. Rie Miyaura, Tokyo University of Agriculture, held 6th Open Seminar of ICCAE on 5th December at the Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences. She reported recent and rapid change in farming style and farmer’s life style in Petir village having 568 farmers and 1700 landless farm workers, which locates in the suburb of Bogor, about 60 km south of Jakarta. The increase in job opportunities in the city has led to an increase in part-time farming, a decrease in income derived from agriculture and an increase in the numbers of landless farm workers. In consequence, farmers are loosing good farmer spirit and not likely to take good care of agriculture by stopping the recycling of farm by-product within their farming, crop cultivation - sheep/goat raising - fish culture. She indicated her concern on the agroecological perspective on the reviving the agriculture through recycling farm resources and products within farming system. However, the participants discussed with her how those farmers could be motivated again for a good farming, with a strong wonder of loosing of cultural aspects of agriculture and farming under such conditions appeared in suburban villages.

With the rapid development of cities in Southeast Asia, the conditions and environment of agricultural operators (farmers) have been changing. The increase in job opportunities has led to an increase in part-time farming, a decrease in income derived from agriculture and an increase in the numbers of landless farm workers. In this seminar, I will focus on the case of West Java from the agroecological viewpoint. I will discuss how income derived from agriculture can be increased and at the same time cultural and community values retained, through the adoption of particular farming systems.
