What would be a hot topic in rice production at present? Development of business models that would prompt more marketable rice as a commodity of small international trade compared with wheat or maize? Importance as a staple food for many of 9.7 billion populations by 2050? Growing interest in process of production such as "certified special cultivation rice"? There may not be a totally new surprise, but rice production is undergoing changes at places which are beyond (=transboundary) traditional common idea of rice production. This seminar deals with a familiar topic of rice production for Japanese and Asians. Its recent new trends are introduced from the viewpoints of rice business, rice ecosystems, research and technology development, including cases in Japan and oversea, to discuss sustainable rice production in future.
