Indonesia is a country that has a population of over 250 million people. The agricultural sector has a strategic role as a provider of raw materials for small and medium industries, contributing 15% of GDP, absorbing 33.3% of the total workforce, and the primary source (70%) of rural household income. One of the problem faced in Indonesian agriculture is a shifting use of productive paddy fields around 100,000 ha per year. Therefore, increasing the use of suboptimal land becomes a necessity that cannot be avoided. Productive paddy field in Indonesia is only 8.6 million hectares compared with suboptimal available potential suboptimal land which is around 33.4 million hectares. Suboptimal land in Indonesia has various characteristics that require different efforts to make it productive. So that it will require a huge effort to improve productivity of suboptimal land. This seminar deals with some efforts and strategy to increase the role of suboptimal land agriculture in Indonesia to meet various current and future needs. It is also proposed any research and collaboration need to be performed.
