International Center for Research and Education in Agriculture, Nagoya University in collaboration with Graduate School of Bioagricultural Sciences, Nagoya University, Bioscience and Biotechnology Center, Nagoya University and other research institutions have been undertaking international collaborative research for improving rice productivity in Africa. From May 22, 2013 to May 21, 2018, in collaboration with Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), we have implemented an international joint research project titled "The project on rice research for tailor-made breeding and cultivation technology development in Kenya" supported by JST/JICA SATREPS, and established a research base with breeding facilities, trait evaluation systems, and a new laboratory in Kenya. Furthermore, in collaboration with WISH project led by the Bioscience and Biotechnology Center, we have developed many promising lines of rice carrying useful genes/QTLs using technologies such as molecular breeding and DNA marker-assisted selection. In this open seminar, we will report on the achievements so far related to the activities in Kenya, and introduce new initiatives through collaboration with RIKEN and its prospects.
